What is Bada Bagh
- Bada Bagh” (or Barabagh) means “Big Garden.” It’s a garden complex about 6 km north of Jaisalmer city on Ramgarh Road.
- The main feature: a row of royal cenotaphs (locally called chhatris) built by the Bhatti rulers of Jaisalmer over time, in memory of the Maharawals, their queens, princes, etc.
- There’s also a dam (Jait Bandh), a tank (Jait Sar), and a pillar (Govardhan Stambh) commemorating those water works. These were built to bring water and greenery to the desert landscape.
History
- The project began with Maharawal Jait Singh II (in early 16th century) who built the dam and tank to make that area green.
- After his death, his son Lunkaran continued the work: building the garden and the first chhatri in his father’s memory.
- The tradition of building cenotaphs continued up through the 18th, 19th, and early 20th centuries. The last one was intended for Maharawal Jawahir Singh but was never completed (post-Independence) due to superstitious beliefs.
Architecture & Significance
- Cenotaphs are made of sandstone, carved with decorative motifs. Size and ornamentation vary depending on the royal’s rank.
- Inscriptions are present — names of rulers, queens, sometimes symbolic imagery (e.g. figure on horse).
- The site offers especially good views, particularly around sunrise/sunset, with golden light on the sandstone structures.
When to Visit & How Much Time
- Typical visiting time: 1 to 2 hours is enough to walk around, see the cenotaphs, enjoy the views.
- Best time: Winters (from ~November through February). The weather is pleasant; early morning or late afternoon light is best. Summers are very hot.
